Based on a 10 line chapter of sahitya Akademi winning historical novel "kavalkottam" by S.venkatesan , Ekaveera is a treat. Full credit to the director Vasantbalan who developed a small chapter into a magnum opus. Like his earlier movies this one is too a darker avenue. However this time he infuses history into this one.Based on a unique security system to guard madurai the novel achieved highest critical acclaim in Tamilnadu. This movie took a small chapter from the novel as its main story line. The director credited himself of extending the existing story line of that small chapter.
The story begins with a heist by five from a village whose subsistence is on burglary. All villages guard against such burglars. Certain villages make living on burglary. There are rules for every one either the guard or the thief. Pictured in a very very realistic platform the film offers a wide range of colours in life of rural Tamilnadu of 1800A.D. It tells the story of a man trapped in the evil traditions of the society. It presents you the angst, helplessness and surrender of truth to customs, emotions and power of deceit. The characters are well developed. Well adapted and well written, Ekaveera is a canvas of opportunist customs that day which vibrates even today in the darker rooms of every soul.
The movie comes as a surprise. It has a historical premise. Its a thriller to the core. Its a love story. Its love for life. It is documentation of superstitions. It s hilarious. It is an adventure. It is a nice musical. It is dark and uncovers the evil in the deepest of hearts.
GO for this one. It is a adventure laced with dark moments. Yet it tells you about you. We live in a world of hypocrisy. We always search for a scapegoat for our problems. We lead a life in two entities...one for the society and the other in dark alleys. We breed in the orthodox superstitions to save our dark life. We are different from other forms of life. We kill our own species to save our wrongs.
The kings -the slaves -the clergy -the upper class-the traders-are creation of the human race over the years. Even today they exist with different names. Those in power are never immune to emotions. They are guided by emotions of superiority jealousy and ego. Their machinations disturb an entire community. They appear very fair but their souls make camps in the saitans garden. This is the story of one such powerful man.
Photography is a treat in this movie. The songs haunt us even after the end.A bit slow in narration but it is required. People may say this is tamil native. But the emotions are universal.
There is a dialogue which the queen says to the king. It is as follows.
కత్తితో లేదా విషంతోనే చంపనక్కరలేదు. విత్తుతో కూడ చంపచ్చు
You need not kill with sword or poison. You can will with a seed.
